Animefest Labor Day Weekend
The price is a little higher than what you would pay for other cons but from what I can tell, they’ve got tons of entertainment, so you shouldn’t have a problem getting your money’s worth. AND there is always the cosplay! Check out the website of Anna, The Galaxy Life, who will be going as Rainbow Dash!

Batman Begins Confusion from the Tech Tards
It started innocently enough with the posting of a picture to the Tech Tards Facebook page.
Right?
And then someone posted a comment stating that in their confusion they did a search and then followed with this brilliance!
Isn’t the internet awesome!

On the Death of Harry Harrison
I have to say that I was a little shaken upon hearing that Harrison had passed away. I’ve been a fan of his since junior high. I remember reading ‘The Stainless Steel Rat For President’ and loving it so much. “Slippery Jim” DiGriz was a bad guy you could like. Since then, I’ve come to like all of his writings, including ‘Bill the Galactic Hero.’ And yes, that’s my copy of ‘Make Room!’ that was movie-titled ‘Soylent Green.’ Harry! You’ve given me years of reading pleasure and you will be sorely missed. Godspeed and rest in peace.

Review: The Dark Knight Rises
Leave everything you know about the comic book version outside the theater. Fortunately, I was not familiar with the comic book version, or at least the Bane/Batman story, so that was the easy part. I will go back and read it to catch up, though. I had some discussion with some of the guys from ScifiFX and Fellowship of the Geeks about the movie, me being the only one who had not seen it yet, about how true it was to the original. I’ve learned a long time ago to not try and compare a movie to the original source material. In only a few cases has it translated well. This is the Dark Knight character, a dirtier, grittier, and darker Batman who does what it takes to save Gotham.
The first thing that jumped at me and made me physically yell at the screen (in a good way) was the bat pod or motorcycle. We didn’t really get to see it used to it’s fullest abilities in The Dark Knight (affiliate link), but it definitely gets put through it’s paces in this one. Trust me, you’ll love it! And the ‘Bat!’ I can’t say enough; I want one. That is all.
A great addition to the movie was Anne Hathaway as Selena Kyle. Though she is never referred to as Catwoman, her profession gives her away. Anne plays her perfectly (noticed how I didn’t go there) and is an integral part to the story.
I loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character though the hype that John Blake received leading up to the movie release was maybe a bit overblown. He was a great character and a true hero, but not as great as I had anticipated. I think if the hype had been downplayed a little, I would have been blown away.
In certain spots the movie can seem to be slow, but only because there is so much information to put out. But it doesn’t stay that way for long. The over-all story is very good and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Once the bat guano hits the fan and the siege of Gotham starts, you learn how truly evil Bane is and really start thinking to yourself that this is not going to end well.
As for the ending, it does tie itself up and you are left knowing that Gotham is safe and everything will be okay. I am man enough to say that I shed a tear here and there for the characters, and I was happy with the movie. Fanboys and girls might differ but for those of you who love a good action movie with memorable characters and awesome story will not be disappointed!
If you’ve seen the movie, what did you think?

Tim Taylor at Strip Con–Dallas Webcomics Expo
I got a chance to get out this past week and visit the Expo and I’m glad I did. I drove back in from visiting family in East Texas and then turned around and heading back after the show. It was a small price to pay.
I was totally unaware of Tim Taylor’s appearance and so shuffled in just as it was beginning. In fact, I hate to say this, but I don’t think a lot of folks knew he was here, because I was the fifth person to sit down and that included Tim and Jedi Cole at the table. Being that I did walk in on the beginning, I was jabbed at about finally getting there, where had I been, and now that I was there, they could finally start. We were asked if we had any questions and I admitted to the fact that I had not read the book or seen the movie, so, yes, there will be lots of questions.
It turns out that Tim is a really cool guy. He was a stand up comedian for about 10 years before trying out for the movie ‘Heart of Dixie.’ Since then he’s done numerous roles as a character actor and finally landed on ‘The Hunger Games’ as one of the Game Keepers. He now lives in Dallas as a great midway point between Hollywood and New York and seems to like it here so far.
He will be at Space City Con in Houston this week, GeekFest in Killeen next week, and at Galaxy Ranger Fandays in Abilene on September 29th. If you get the chance, stop by his table and say hi.

Space City Con in Houston
A great show is expected in Houston this weekend of August 10-12. Space City Con touts itself as “an all-ages festival of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, literature, and art, in the spirit of Houston, Texas!” There are a lot of things to get excited about from the list of guests, authors, and artists to the gaming and costumes. Nichelle Nichols of Uhura fame will be in attendance as well as Jason David Frank of Power Rangers and Tim Taylor from the Hunger Games movie. For you readers, they will have R. A. Salvatore and Tracy & Laura Hickman visiting as well as many local authors such as Henry Melton. If you go, be sure and let me know how it turned out!
