Happy New Year Citizens of the Galaxy Called Dallas

Just a quick blurb to say that I have had an up and down 2012 and hope to have a better 2013. One thing that has kept me going through it all though are the people that I’ve met along the way. From that guy who volunteers at all the cons because of his airline miles to that girl who wrote the scifi novel under combat conditions overseas (more on both of these later this year), you are why I enjoy my “hobby” and will keep on writing on this site. I hope to make it bigger and better in 2013 and make it a place that you’ll keep coming back to again and again.

But more importantly is this little blurb from my favorite author, Neil Gaiman.

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art – Write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.

As magical a quote as can be found. And inspiring. Best of all, for 2013, be inspired.

Austin Welcomes the Zombie Infested 5K

This is the third in a line of apocalypse runs that I’ve listed over the last three months. The other two looked cool, but after watching the video for this one, I want to lose some weight and start running 5K's the Zombie way! The song that underlines the video, “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, is awesome, too, and if you don’t want to run the race after watching it, then you might need to watch it again.

The event is in Austin and can be found at Run For Your Lives.

Race for your life, Charlie Brown!

I’ve asked it before, I’ll ask it again. Do any of you run races like these? Tell me your stories!

ALAS, BABYLON to be Discussed by Lewisville Science Fiction Book Club

The Lewisville Science Fiction Book Club will be meeting to discuss Pat Frank’s novel, Alas, Babylon on Friday December 14, 2012. They will be meeting in their usual spot at the IHOP at I-35 and Round Grove Road. They will also be picking titles for the next six months, so feel free to bring book suggestions, if you have them.

Pat Frank, born Harry Hart Frank, was a newspaperman and government consultant in addition to being an author. He served on the Democratic National Committee and was a consultant to the National Aeronautics and Space Council, as well as, the Department of Defense.

Alas, Babylon is the story of a small Florida community dealing with the problems that follow a nuclear war. Written in 1959, it has been a best-seller ever since and still ranks high on many lists. It has, also, gone on to influence many authors. David Brin cites it as having an effect on his own book, The Postman, and William R. Forstchen credits it with helping him flesh out Black Mountain, North Carolina, the setting of his novel One Second After.

Have you read this book? Do you like reading about the survival of man after a holocaust of some type?

Webcomic Rampage 2012 at Dragon’s Lair Austin

WebComicsRampage2012TEASERwebWhatever day you are not marathoning through the LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, you can shoot down to Austin and check out some of your favorite webcomic creators this weekend. What? You don’t have any favorite webcomics? Well, then, even more reason to go. Many creators will be there, and be sure to say ‘Hi’ to my two favorites, Joel Watson of ‘Hijinks Ensue’ and Lar DeSouza of ‘Looking for Group!’ It all takes place this weekend December 8 and 9, 2012.

THE HOBBIT Is Ushered In With THE LORD OF THE RINGS Marathons!

00_175707_10151248463131558_1062285060_o

You have an opportunity to see the entire LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY the weekend before THE HOBBIT opens. Select DFW theaters will be showing all three movies, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, THE TWO TOWERS, and THE RETURN OF THE KING on Saturday, December 8, and some will even show them again on Sunday, December 9. Be sure and check with the different theaters because some have different prices and prizes.

The following week on December 14 you can see how it all began with a return to Peter Jackson’s vision of Middle-Earth. I think that I’ll be hitting the High Frame-Rate 3D showing at an IMAX at midnight. There are also supposed to be some cool swag at a lot of these premieres, so check with the theater websites to see what’s up for grabs.

Will you stand in line at midnight? Will you go see the HFR version or is standard good enough for you?

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Teaser Poster and More

ST13-Poster Star Trek Into Darkness TeaserSo the poster has dropped and from the synopsis of the movie and the look of the poster, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is gonna be a doozy! I liked what J. J. Abrams brought to the table with the re-working of the STAR TREK timeline because it gives us a whole new universe to work with without screwing with the past. That being said, bring it on! And you’ll get to see the first nine minutes of it at one of over five hundred IMAX screens December 14, 2012. That means that you’ll get a little HOBBIT in your STAR TREK, or a little STAR TREK in you HOBBIT, however you wanna look at it.

Three Big Reasons You Should Be At New Orleans Comic Con

Yes, there are more reasons than three to geek out in the Crescent City, but these are my three.New Orleans Wizard World 2012

  1. Stan Lee – Stan “the Man” Lee has been busier lately than any other time in history, and he’s been around a long time. He’ll be here even longer now that Stark has lent him an arc source (pace maker,) but that doesn’t mean wait around to see him. Truly one of the greats of comic publishing and just a down-to-earth genuine and philanthropic guy, as noted by his The Stan Lee Foundation.
  2. The Walking Dead Trio – If you’re a fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead, then you need to be here so that you can meet Norman Reedus, Michael Rooker, and Jon Bernthal. Hit the Q&A sessions to hear all the latest behind-the-scenes details that those gossip mags can’t tell you.
  3. And last, but definitely not least, this year is the 25th anniversary of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. Seven of the original cast (sorry, Patrick Stewart is not in) will be on hand for photos, autographs, and many a story over the long history of this show. This will be the second meeting of the group, with a different lineup, since Austin Comic Con.
Wizard World presents New Orleans Comic Con at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center November 30 through December 2, 2012.
So, if these aren’t your reasons for going, what are? And if you do go, share some photo love!

To top off the 50th year of Doctor Who, All-Con has lined up the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy. McCoy will also be riding the hype of THE HOBBIT where he will portray Radagast the Brown. In a rare celebrity appearance, Mr. McCoy will host some very intimate ‘private’ panels for a limited number of guests and one lucky winner will get to enjoy lunch with him. How cool is that? Get your tickets now! I’ll be there all three days covering as much of the con as possible!

Book Review: OF THIEVES AND ELVES: A SUPERNOVELLA by A. P. Stephens

OF THIEVES AND ELVES by A. P. Stephens brings true champions and wicked evil in a story that reads quickly and stays in your thoughts long after it is done.

A P Stephens Of Thieves and Elves Book CoverA monumental tragedy has befallen the Clan of Ionor, an ancient brotherhood of elven warriors. Concerned when their Master does not reach his secretive business in a distant kingdom, the Elders learn that Tryn, their beloved leader, has been captured by a cutthroat gang of bandits known as the Steel Claw. Yet this is not the darkest of their tidings. The relic under the clan's safekeeping, a weapon of terrible power that was forged by the gods themselves, is also missing. The Ionor dispatch Eonen, a headstrong Elder, and a young and talented apprentice, Tride, to rescue the Master and the relic by infiltrating the bandits' stronghold-the formidable Fortress of Toppledom. As the two determined elves hasten into the unknown beyond their borders to restore balance and honor to their clan, they encounter the true darkness behind the matter-the very origin of the world's evil. Allegiances will be twisted. The fates of many will be set into motion. And the destiny of one will be realized.~Book description

The underlying element of the plot is that one young warrior will have to learn to trust his elders and forge his path in the world. Eonen, who is the elder tasked with finding their missing leader, Tryn, must choose a companion to help him. In this, he turns to Tride, a talented elf who is disliked by his peers because he is not of true lineage to the brotherhood. Eonen trusts him and seems aware of his true potential and cares not what anyone else has to say about it. Knowing that Tride is still a neophyte in certain ways of the order, Eonen still takes him under his guidance and leads him to his destiny.

A. P. Stephens has an uncanny ability for describing action. From flights, fights, to verbal swashbuckling, you will get a very good idea of what is going on in the scene. Even some of the more well-known authors could take a lesson from A. P. He, also, delivers a bad guy that you will love to hate. As Halstrom and his Steel Claw band receive their tribute from the terrified citizens, you just want to reach into the story and crush him with your bare hands. The way he and his minions treat the oppressed makes their ultimate demise so much sweeter.

The first chapter or so was a little wordy and I had to re-read a few times to finally get through it. I think what made it slow going for me is the fact that A. P. was building the background so he could dive right into the story. Once I got past it, it was smooth sailing. Granted, there were a few other spots in the story where he got a little verbose with the description, but I let it pass because it does not detract from the story. When you’ve got to describe the history of a line of protectorate elves and their ancient ways, you need a little bit of room to do it with. Again, this was more of a problem with me and not necessarily a problem with the story.

In the end, I would recommend this tale to anyone who likes a fantastic story with really really bad guys. A 7 out of 10 or 4 stars out of 5.

OF THIEVES AND ELVES can be purchased on www.apstephens.com or on Amazon.com at OF THIEVES AND ELVES: A SUPERNOVELLA.

Be sure and check out Stephens’ WHITE SHADOW SAGA series.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: BLOOD AND CHROME Release on Friday

Battlestar Galactica Blood and Chrome Luke Paqualino

So, word is that there is a new TV show coming in 2013. A prequel of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA reboot and it’s called BLOOD AND CHROME. The release on Friday will be the first in a ten episode series, each episode running 7-12 minutes long. Then in early 2013 they will release the two-hour version on Syfy followed by the DVD. Interesting marketing tactics. I’ll be interested to see how it turns out. The trailer looks phenomenal, but I’ll save my opinion for after it airs.

After the mixed reviews of CAPRICA, how do you think BLOOD AND CHROME will be received?

TESLA VS EDISON: SHOWDOWN AT UNOBTANIUM

Tesla Vs Edison Showdown at Unobtanium 2012“What do you get when you marry a steampunk meet up with a comic con, a music festival, a county fair, the "virtual-world-made-real" approach of a Renaissance festival, toss in a rabid fan base, add a plethora of inventors, hackers, revisionist historians, and "makers," wrap it in a carefully constructed mythos...
...and add electricity?”

Yep, that’s what they are saying! And boy does TESLA VS EDISON: SHOWDOWN AT UNOBTANIUM sound super cool! It’s a two-day event like a Renaissance festival but there is a story unfolding around you as you interact with the cast and even become a part of the story. It all centers around the fictional mining town of “Unobtanium, Texas.”

“Arch-rivals Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison will be trading barbs throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. The actual “Showdown” will occur on Saturday night at 10 pm and re-occur Sunday at 5:00 pm. Not unlike a political candidate’s forum, the brain duel will start out somewhat civilly, with questions posed by our celebrity moderator, but will denigrate into the knock-down, drag out you’ve been waiting breathlessly for! Sparks will fly. Ray guns will be drawn. History will be re-made!”

It’s not too late to get tickets and this definitely sounds like it will make for a great weekend.

Batman Live–World Arena Tour at American Airlines Center

Batman Live Arena Tour at American Airlines Center Dallas TexasFaithfully adapted from the DC Comics’ characters and stories, BATMAN LIVE focuses on Robin’s quest for justice, which leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero, the mysterious vigilante known as the Batman – much to the dismay of his protective guardian, millionaire Bruce Wayne – who secretly happens to be Batman.

This dynamic triangle resolves itself in a non-stop thrill-ride across Gotham City that transforms Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson into the legendary crime-fighters Batman and Robin and transports the audience from the Big Top of Haly’s Circus to the lower depths of Arkham Asylum – from the glittering peaks of the The Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge to the subterranean wonders that await inside the Batcave, which features a revolutionary, all-new Batmobile designed exclusively for BATMAN LIVE by Professor Gordon Murray.

First, Batman Live – World Arena Tour doesn’t look like the Broadway show about that other super hero. This is full-on story-telling with action and fire and Batmobiles! The show runs from December 12th to the 16th and you can get tickets here. Since tickets are not cheap, you may want to head over to Red Carpet Crash and try to win a pair of tickets for opening night. Is this something that you might take the family out to see?

Denton Public Library and A-Kon Hosts International Games Day

International Game Day IGD12-logoDenton Public Library will be hosting International Games Day on Saturday, November 3, 2012. The Denton Public Library is located at 3020 N Locust St., Denton, TX 76209.

International Games Day is an initiative around the globe to reintroduce neighborhoods to the educational, recreational, and social values of gaming using the library as the focal point. This was started by the American Library Association five years ago and has grown to over 20,000 people who will participate on November 3rd.

“Games, like libraries, are ever changing and intergenerational,” said ALA President Maureen Sullivan. “No matter what age, game or experience level, gaming in libraries provides a space for diverse groups of people to come together in a way they can’t anywhere else in the community – in the spirit of play.”

In a quote from the Facebook Event Page;

In the 21st century, libraries are about much more than books. On Saturday, November 3, 2012, two thousand libraries around the world will showcase gaming programs and services in support of IGD12. Ethereal Chrysalis by Syl Disjonk Enter the multidimensional maze of the Ethereal Chrysalis, where the doors of perception become the annihilation of all rational thoughts.
We, The Masses by Robyn O’Neil Houston artist Robyn O'Neil is known for her large-scale, graphite drawings of men lost in vast, snowy landscapes, landscapes that evoke austere beauty, danger, and horror. This short film, produced in conjunction with Werner Herzog's Rogue Film School, animates O'Neil's world. A solitary figure, literally dropped from the sky, confronts unreasoning antagonists and natural disaster, and possibly attains transcendence.

Are you a big budget horror person or do you like the indies?

UTA Site for Local Astronomy Day Observance

NGC 206 and Star Clouds of Andromeda courtesy of Bob and Janice FeraAstronomy Day is an event that was started back in 1973 in an effort to bring the general public in contact with hobbyists, enthusiasts, and professionals to raise awareness of the study. It happens in the Spring and Fall on a date that falls closest to the first quarter moon.

This year, the University of Texas – Arlington will join with The Ft. Worth Astronomical Society and The Texas Astronomical Society to give people a chance to view demonstrations, listen to lectures, and do a little observing. Amateur astronomers will have their telescopes set up outside the planetarium, weather permitting. They are also looking for donations of books and other astro-related items for a children’s free raffle and need volunteers at the registration and raffle table. Please contact www.texasastro.org or www.fortworthastro.com if you can help!

Wizard World Austin Celebrates 25 Years of Star Trek: The Next Generation

Patrick Stewart Jean Luc PicardThere isn’t much more that I can say about Wizard World: Austin, except that I wish I was able to attend! Though there are many fine actors (I’ll get to that), artists, and other personalities the thing that I’m going to miss the most is the reunion of the cast of "Star Trek: TNG.” Well, at least eight of them will be taking the stage the first time in the U.S., including Stewart (Captain Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data) and Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher). Heads up, though. This is an extra event that you will have to pay for. Which is kind of screwy if you ask me. As if you’re not going to be spending enough money already. Hopefully, you get an autographed photo with that paid admission.

the-situation-collectors-edition

Oh! And about fine actors! Does Wizard World buy into the Syfy Channels marketing line of “Imagine Greater?” They must when you have the wrestler CM Punk showing up. I think they’ve been doing this for several years now, but to me, it just doesn’t fit. And then this abomination! Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino (“Jersey Shore”) will be there. REALLY?!? Oh, yeah. He’s got a comic book out. Or more to the point, his image and likeness will be “gracing” a comic book. Dear, Lord.

Now, that I’ve got that out of the way. Was searching the internet this morning and came across this great video. Just when you didn’t thing you could stand to here GANGNAM STYLE again, along comes this video. One of the best movies ever! It’s “Lo Pan Style!” And James Hong, the original Lo Pan, makes an appearance!

Lo Pan Style (Gangnam Style Parody) with James Hong Cameo

Questions:

  1. Going to Austin for Wizard World?
  2. Going to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Reunion, even though it’s an extra charge?
  3. How do you feel about Wrestling Stars and Jersey Shore being represented?
  4. What do you think about Lo Pan Style? Huh? Huh? What’d I tell ya?

Veterans of MST3K Bring You RIFFTRAX LIVE: BIRDEMIC

If any of you have ever witnessed Mystery Science Theater 3000 then you understand why this is a must-see. For those that do not know what Mystery Science Theater 3000 is then you need to get a Netflix subscription and start watching. Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett were just a few of the amazing people who brought us Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and Gypsy along with their human friend, played by Joel Hodgson then Nelson, who were forced to watch bad movies and their reactions monitored by a mad scientist. Now, the show is on the net and called Rifftrax. I witnessed their live simulcast of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and loved it. This looks to be another great show. Not a lot is known about the movie BIRDEMIC except that somehow Tippi Hedren found her way into it. Too bad.

TCM Event Series Presents FRANKENSTEIN and THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

Halloween, like Christmas (?), is a great time of year for catching up on favorite movies. Thanksgiving doesn’t have favorite movies. Wait, I lied. PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES. Anyway, back to my first thought. Halloween is the time to re-watch old favorites and how better than on the big screen the way it was originally intended! Wednesday, October 24th, NCM Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, and Universal will present a double-feature FRANKENSTEIN and THE BRIDE OF FRANKESTEIN at participating theaters. This coincides with Universal’s 100th Anniversary.

In addition to the movies, it will be hosted by TCM Host Robert Osborne. Joining him will be Sara Karloff, the daughter of Boris Karloff, Bela Legosi, Jr., son of the DRACULA star, and Academy Award winning make-up artist, Rick Baker. Interviews and discussions will concern how Karloff and Legosi set the standard for the Hollywood horror film.

Fandays Adventures!

This was my first Fandays visit and I was not disappointed, except when it was over. I think next year I will be getting the all-weekend pass and just geekin’ it out. I had heard about the line debacle back in May with Dallas Comic Con, but after talking with a few that had gone to it and seen interviews and videos from others, I figures with a little preparation, I’d be fine.

Upon arriving at the Irving Convention Center, I was immediately escorted to the ticket booth, and thought, “this isn’t so bad,” but was then escorted back out to the line. Dreams dashed, I settled in and waited. Time flew by pretty quickly and once the doors were opened up, I only waited about ten minutes to get in.

DSC03575I always like to walk the exhibitor’s hall once and get a lay of the land and to take pictures. There was plenty of eye candy for the photographer and merchandise to be had this year. I walked a little bit with my friends, Les and Thomas of The Fellowship of the Geeks, and made mental notes of things I might come back to buy. On the back DSC03614wall, Al Plastino was signing a old issue of Superman. I overheard him tell the guy that even in the condition it was in, he figured it was worth $900. And that was before he signed it. Ralph Bakshi was in a good mood when I asked him for a photograph!

Also, got to meet up with my good friend Thomas Branch. It seems that he has some good news of which I will report on later, but it does concern some of  his artwork, so stay tuned for that.

Stopped by Eddie Medina’s table and talked for a little bit. When he heard that my daughter is a Wonder Woman fan, he helped round out her collection with something to put up on her wall. Thank you, Eddie! She loved it!

Gloria Oliver, a local author, had a table and I got to talk to her for a bit. She loves to sit and fan watch and she takes some really good photos. If you follow her on Twitter, you can keep up with all the cool costumes.

A few months back, I met A. J. Moore at a small comic book get-together and became an instant fan of his children’s comic, Dorse. He was back at Fandays with more Dorse goods and will soon have Dorse plushes which my kid will really love.

Another guy that I met a few months back and really like is Matt Largent. He is the creator of an animated Star Trek parody – Stalled Trek: Amutt Time and it’s hilarious. If you can get your hands on a copy, do check it out.

DSC03633My brushes with fame came late in the day. With money being tight, I was going to pass up on autographs this year, but my crush was in town. Yes, my wife knows about her. Felicia Day and Eddie McClintock were side by side and so, I decided to get his autograph, as well as Felicia’s. Let me just say that Felicia is as pretty in person as she is in photos or on camera. Most celebrities look different, and not in a good way, when met in person, but not her. She is, also, just as sweet and pleasant to meet. I had to ask her how she handles her schedule, because she seems to be everywhere these days. If not producing The Guild or working on Geek & Sundry, she’s reading and posting reviews on Goodreads, or doing interviews or writing! I recently read a post on Lifehacker.com about how she works, her workflow and the different types of gadgets she uses and when I told her that I didn’t believe that article at all, she admitted that those types of days were few and far between. Some days it all production work, some are all writing, and she says that she gets away quite a bit. Can’t blame her. I was able to get an autographed Guild still and a photo of the two of us. It came out blurry, so I’ve decided next time, I’m bringing my own photographer!

DSC03634Eddie McClintock was right next to her and he was having a good time. I had him autograph a photo for my wife and asked for a photo of me and him. As he stepped out for our photo, he photo-bombed Felicia’s picture with a fan. I’m hoping that person will post it somewhere, so I can see it. Felicia with bunny ears and Eddie grinning maniacally over their shoulders! Laughs all around and a little dance from Eddie AND THEN he photo bombs us! Seems I didn’t understand what a “lean-out” photo  listed on his sign was. I saw several types of photos listed and I should have known it was a joke when I saw “Side Glance – $80.” Just as his sidekick snaps the photo, Eddie leans out so you can only see half of his head! It was pretty funny and he gave me a bro-hug, so I’m not complaining. I will say that his character on Warehouse 13 is not too different from the real person!

Have you got any interesting stories to tell? Fandays nightmares? Tell us about them!
