Policy Changes at A Galaxy Called Dallas

We’ve been growing over the last year and that’s great for everyone involved. It means that we get to be your comic shop for a while and we want to continue giving you great service. With that in mind, we’ve revamped our subscription plan to cut out some costs and a lot of labor.

Starting January 1st, we will go back to a tiered plan like we started with when we opened in August of 2014. New subscribers will still be able to get one title or 100 or more, but their discount will be based on that number.
      • 1-9 titles will get a 5% discount on those titles
      • 10-19 titles will get 15% discount on those titles
      • 20+ titles will get the full 20% discount on those titles
There will no longer be a 10% off general discount and we will discontinue bag and board service. You will get a 20% discount on all supplies, such as bags, boards, and boxes.

For folks that already have pulls, you are grandfathered in and will continue to get your 20% discount as long as you have titles. If you close your account and come back later, even a day later, you will get the new discounts. The only thing that will change with grandfathered accounts is that you will lose the 10% general discount and no more bags and boards.

The reason for dropping bags and boards was less about the cost but more about the amount of time spent bagging and boarding at the register. It is a huge time suck and I think that customers will appreciate a faster checkout along with the 20% off of supplies.

I, also, feel the need to go over our ordering availability of titles for new folks and a reminder for folks that might not use it as much. We ask that you be as specific as possible when asking for titles to be added to your list. As I’m sure you are aware of, there are a lot of titles that have the Avengers, the Inhumans, the Justice League, etc. in the title, so we need to know exactly which one you are wanting. Don’t ask for “anything X related.” We have no way of keeping track of what titles are mentioning, guest starring, appearing, etc. who and with over 100 subscribers it is another labor intensive task. That’s why we give our Previews catalogs to you for free. So, that you can be aware of what titles are coming out and be proactive on new titles.

One of the biggest problems we run into is customers not adding a title to their pull until the week before it comes out. There are a few dates that customers may not be aware of and those are the initial order date, the final order cutoff date, and the street date. The street date most will be familiar with because that is the date that the title hits the racks. The initial order date is the date that we place our orders for product that will be available two or more months down the line. This helps publishers gauge how much to print. The Final Order Cutoff date is the last day that we can adjust our orders before the print run begins. This usually happens a month before street date. If you come to us with a title for your list and it’s after the FOC, then we may end up not having enough copies to cover the demand, especially if several customers come to us at one time. This happens because in our search to find a sweet spot between selling all of our copies of a title and not having a lot of overstock, we sometimes don’t order a lot of a title. If we add a title to your list and it could take some time before the orders catch up.

Variants, where do I begin. Variants are offered on different levels, also. Some are offered where we can buy as many as we want. Some are offered as incentives meaning we have to buy a certain number of the original cover before we can buy one copy of the variant. But they don’t tell you that in the Previews. They tell you to talk to us. Which makes us the bearer of bad news when we can’t get them. By that, I mean that we can’t possibly order enough to satisfy the requirement. For instance, last January when the Star Wars variants came out one was a 1:50 meaning that I had to order 50 regular covers to get that one. I did and it took me six months to sell all of them. And that’s a popular title with 20 subscribers. Variants that are open to order are usually only ordered if someone has expressed an interest in them. If you want a variant, be specific and don’t be disappointed if it’s one that we can’t get. Would you believe that there are 1:5000 variants. That’s right 5000 copies just to order 1 copy of the variant.

Last of all, ordering. When placing an order with us, orders that are not picked up within 30 days of receiving will be put on the shelf to sell. Items that you pull from our shelf and ask us to hold will only be held for 48 hours. We will work with you if you have run up on hard times, but we have to sell things to stay in business. We’ll work with you, if you work with us.

I didn’t intend for this to be this long, but here you go. I hope that it’s agreeable to everyone and we hope to see you at the shop in the near future.

DFW Brain Tumor Walk 2015

To my Geek family I'd like to ask if you can help. We are less than a month away from the yearly DFW Brain Tumor Walk and we are attempting to raise money for brain tumor research through the National Brain Tumor Society. I lost my beautiful wife to a brain tumor 3 years ago and wish that no one has to go through what I, my daughter, and our family have had to go through. In her honor, would you consider donating or passing this message on to those that might be in a better position to help. Even a dollar helps the cause.

We’ve raised $100 so far with a raffle that we held on Star Wars Reads Day and will have a collection box out at the counter for those that want to donate face to face. If you’re interested in walking with us, feel free to ask me how and we’ll get you set up.

Link to our Team Kiwi Page. Kiwi was her nickname. Thank you.

Banned Book Week a Success!

I”d like to thank everyone who came by the shop during Banned Book Week and allowed us to litter their fragile minds with great banned reads! Censorship is not good in any form and infringes on the individual’s rights to make their own choices. In the meantime, read some banned books year round and pass them on.

Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabar and Anna Waterhouse Out 9/25.

If you are a Holmes fan, then you know of his brother Mycroft. But, how much do you know? Here lies a tale of a young Mycroft and events that made him the man he was.

Holmesians rejoice, MYCROFT HOLMES by the incredible NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse, is out today!

Fresh out of Cambridge University, the young Mycroft Holmes is already making a name for himself in government, working for the Secretary of State for War. Yet this most British of civil servants has strong ties to the faraway island of Trinidad, the birthplace of his best friend, Cyrus Douglas, a man of African descent, and where his fiancée Georgiana Sutton was raised.

Mycroft’s comfortable existence is overturned when Douglas receives troubling reports from home. There are rumors of mysterious disappearances, strange footprints in the sand, and spirits enticing children to their deaths, their bodies found drained of blood. Upon hearing the news, Georgiana abruptly departs for Trinidad. Near panic, Mycroft convinces Douglas that they should follow her, drawing the two men into a web of dark secrets that grows more treacherous with each step they take...

Written by NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and screenwriter Anna Waterhouse, Mycroft Holmes reveals the untold story of Sherlock’s older brother. This harrowing adventure changed his life, and set the stage for the man Mycroft would become: founder of the famous Diogenes Club and the hidden power behind the British government.

DC Deck-Building Game: Teen Titans is in!

You have to admit that if you’ve played the DC Deck-Building game, it’s pretty sweet! And with every expansion comes new teams to play and I can’t wait to try this one.

The new focus of the set revolves around Ongoing abilities: Cards that stay in play until you need them. Every time you put an Ongoing card into play, it essentially gives you an extra card to utilize on a future turn. Previously, only Locations and a couple of other cards could ever stay in play. Now every card type at every power level has multiple different cards that are Ongoing. Sometimes they help you every turn. But mostly they stay in play until you choose to discard them for their mighty effects. If you can build up several Ongoing cards, unleash as many as you need to take down the Super-Villains!

If you’re interested, come by the shop while supplies last!

Subspace Communique 6-9-2015

Congratulations, Graduates of 2015!

What next?!?

By now, most ceremonies are over with or are soon to be over with and those of you who are graduating will face the next question of adulthood; do I put away those things of my childhood or do I embrace them? Ha! I'm a 46 year old kid and I love it! Granted, I let go of a lot things when I joined the Navy right out of high school, and, boy, do I regret it. The loss of things, not the Navy. I've played catch up since then and I'm pretty happy. Now, I'm talking a little bit about collecting things, but I'm also talking about habits that make us happy, too. We can be adults and still wear our silly hats. We can still have kids and buy a house and dress strange on the weekends. We're geeks! So, as you go forth to find your fame and fortune, don't forget what makes you happy!

Graduate Sale!

All of this week will be our Graduation Sale! I began with just a sale for High School Graduates but then I realized that there were pre-K and Kindergarten grads and GED grads and Trade School grads and grads of programs we didn't even know about. So, then I turned into Oprah and not just you, but you and you and you get a 20% discount on your entire purchase this week. This sale will run through Saturday June 13, 2015.

New Event!

We would like to invite everyone out tonight for our Previews Party! It's a new once a month meeting to let you wander through the catalogs and give us ideas on what you would like to see in the shop. Most folks aren't aware at how many items are offered up every month in the Previews Catalog and we are looking for feedback on what you might like to see in the shop.

So come join us, eat some pizza, drink some drinks and tell us your deepest desires . . . . .

Game Times

Wednesday Night D&D Encounters start at 6:00 PM
Friday Night Magic starts at 7:00 PM
Heroclix starts June 12 at 8:00 PM
Saturday Force of Will starts at 2:00 PM
General gameplay is anytime the store is open.

Goto our Facebook Events for more info!

Be sure and get your orders to us by close of business Thursday, June 25, 2015. Copies of Previews are at the store and are free while they last!

Remember that if you place an order for something out of the Previews Catalog, we give you a great discount. Just email, call, or message us and we'll give you the details.

Subscription Changes

We've changed our subscription service a little bit, by giving you a some new perks and clearing up some blurry parts. Here's the details:

Give us your list by filling out a form in the shop, emailing us, or Facebook message. As they come in, we'll put them in a box for you and wait for you to pick them up. Even if you only collect 1 title a month, we’ll pull it for you! We'll give you 20% off the cover and you get 10% off of anything else in the store. This does not stack on already discounted or sale priced items. Here’s the one catch: If it’s not on your list, there’s NO DISCOUNT. The 20% OFF of your comics ONLY applies to the titles on your list. If you add it to your list, then you get the discount. If you’re just trying it out, that's cool. You can drop it anytime that you want, we just ask that you pay for the ones that we've pulled for you. This whole thing is free, we just ask that you pay for what you order.

We want to help you get the comics and collectibles that you want, we just ask that you come in at least once a month and try to keep your list under control. Even if you just make it in once a month, that's great, but if you're pulling 10 comics a week, but only buying 10 a month, then you may need to reassess your list. If you've run into a problem with job, space, life, just let us know. Call, email, or stop in and let us know what the situation is and we can work with you. As long as you keep in touch, we’re happy.

Stealing an idea from other comic shops, as a subscriber you qualify for a 40% preorder discount on any collection where you’ve subscribed to the single issues from us. For example, if you’ve subscribed to Saga #13-18, you can preorder Saga Vol 3 for 40% off! Best of all, you don’t need to sign up for this additional service, it’s free with your subscription sign-up!

Wanna Pre-Order Clash Of Rebellions Boosters?

Just received an email from our distributor soliciting pre-orders for Yu-gi-oh!'s Clash of Rebellions . If this is something that your interested in, email or message me for price.

Clash Of Rebellions Booster Solicitation

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. is proud to bring you the 3rd core booster release for 2015, Clash of Rebellions. This new 1st Edition 100-card booster set is where the new Red-Eyes cards make a big comeback, fiery new Deck themes burst onto the stage, and more new cards for the latest Decks!

Red-Eyes Monsters make a big return after almost two years behind the scenes! Clash of Rebellions introduces brand new cards to go with Joey’s “Red-Eyes” dragon theme from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. Many of these cards will have synergy with cards from Legendary Collection 4: Joey’s World.

Clash of Rebellions also presents brand new Deck themes that’ll light up the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG tournament scene: fiery new Igknight Monsters burn up their own men to Summon gigantic soldiers, flowery Aromages pump up your Life Points and gain extra powers while you’re ahead, and a brand new Deck theme based on one of the most popular American fairy tales ever known that will continue to be supported in subsequent sets.

In addition to new themes, Clash of Rebellions also supplies Duelists with more new cards for the latest Decks, like Infernoids, Raidraptors, Performapals, Superheavy Samurai, Toon, and more. Finally, Duelists will also be able to use Xyz Monsters for Synchro Summoning by giving them Levels.

The Clash of Rebellions booster set includes 100 cards: 48 Common Cards, 20 Rare Cards, 14 Super Rare Cards, 10 Ultra Rare Cards, and 8 Secret Rare Cards.

The deadline to order is May 21, 2015 with a release date of August 7, 2015.

A Galaxy Called Dallas is the nexus of all things geeky located just north of Downtown Garland on the Southeast corner of Belt Line Road and North Garland Avenue. You can reach us at 972-530-2600.

Free Comic Book Day 2015 Roundup

It’s my Monday, though it’s Tuesday for the rest of you and I’m still aching from the amount of business that we did on Free Comic Book Day. We pretty much ran an entire week’s worth of sales in that one day and I can’t say much more than THANK YOU! Most people look at the money they spend going into the owner’s pocket and nothing more, but that money goes to pay the bills, the other employees, and for the product that we sell. Basically, when you purchase from us, you ensure that we will be here tomorrow and the next day and the next. Again, thank you!

I would like to, also, say thank you to all of the friends that helped man the store. I was overwhelmed by how many people showed up, so next year, I will be prepared. I’d like to thank Cole Houston and Andrew Farmer for coming out and recording for their podcast, Purr Kayla and her daughter for coming out painting faces and making masks, and all of the costumed fans out in their Free Comic Book Day best. We especially appreciate Captain America Dad and Little Man for coming out and letting us celebrate Little Man’s birthday with a cake.

Feel free to head to our Facebook page and see the photos that were taken and submitted and if you have any photos, please share them so that others can enjoy them!

Roy Thomas Joins All-Star Creative Team For Red Sonja #1973 - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News

Red Sonja is one of my favorite characters of all time. She can hold her own with Conan and hey, she's not bad on the eyes. Looking for Volunteers

We are very few, the employees, at store A Galaxy Called Dallas. We stay busy stocking, cleaning, taking care of customers, making sure the bills get paid, that we get paid and such.

One of the things that we’ve always wanted to have happen at the shop is a fun game night. Saturdays are hit and miss and we’d love to make it a hit on a more consistent basis and even concentrate on individual games. We’ve got a small group of Yu-Gi-Oh! players and would like to see a Magic group, a Dice Masters night, Role-playing night, Hero Clix, Munchkin, and maybe a Star Realms. Unfortunately, we don’t have the manpower to step out from behind the register and run these games.

This is where we reach out to you, the gamers. We are looking for game masters, dungeon masters, referees, and others to run the games! We are familiar with the rules, but can’t leave the paying customer at the register. If you are interested in helping put together a game night, we can provide you with the tools that are required to do it. Just email or call us to find out how!

James’ Pick: Ei8ht #1 by Dark Horse

American Vampire’s Rafael Albuquerque brings a tale of his own that catches you at the start and won’t let go! Pilot Joshua wakes up with amnesia and slowly reconstructs what happened as he figures out what is going on.

Co-writing with Mike Johnson (Supergirl), Albuquerque tells the tale of Joshua who has made a deal to find someone. We only find this out as he regains this info from his amnesia. Waking from a crash in the middle of an unknown landscape. He learns a little at a time and we are right there with him. We learn that he has traveled in time (across dimensions, maybe) and has a communicator with a voice that he doesn’t recognize. Told to follow a dinosaur, yes, you heard right, he comes to learn more about his predicament.

With Albuquerque’s art style which I’ve come to love in American Vampire, the color that added to his lines really make this a cool looking read. The story is gripping and I’m ready for the next installment. Dark Horse has added another great title to their stable and this is the reason I don’t read a lot of titles from the two big dogs anymore.

What’s you’re favorite pick of recent publishing? Tell me all about it!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Crossed Souls Advanced Edition

Short notice, but if you are interested in orders for Yu-Gi-Oh! Crossed Souls Advanced Edition, then let us know by 4pm Friday, February 20, 2015.

Yugioh Crossed Souls AdvancedKonami Digital Entertainment is proud to bring you the next core booster release, Crossed Souls.   This new booster unlocks new Deck-building opportunities like never before for the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME.  This 100-card first Edition set introduces the Zefra monsters, a new monster omni-theme that crosses over five different Deck types!

Each Zefra monster is tied in to a popular monster group from recent sets, making them either Zefra/Shaddoll, Zefra/’tellarknight, Zefra/Yang Zing, Zefra/Nekroz, or Zefra/Ritual Beast. Duelists with any of these Decks can add their new Zefra monsters to spice the Deck up, OR build a Deck entirely of Zefra monsters, tying all five together!

While their cross-theme potential and monster effects vary, all Zefra monsters can take advantage of the new, powerful Zefra Spell & Trap Cards in Crossed Souls, magnifying the power boost that Zefra monsters give to any Deck that includes them.  At the same time, a pure Zefra Deck (or a Deck with appropriate Zefra splash) can now gain increased access to Shaddoll, ‘tellarknight, Yang Zing, Nekroz, and Ritual Beast cards!

Zefra monsters open up unprecedented crossover Deck-building avenues, but Crossed Souls also arms Duelists with new non-Zefra cards for their Burning Abyss, Madolche, Infernoid, U.A., Yosenju, and other Decks.

Fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and TV series will also be treated to a slew of new cards from the newest generation of the series – Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V.

The Crossed Souls booster set includes 100 cards: 48 Common Cards, 20 Rare Cards, 14 Super Rare Cards, 10 Ultra Rare Cards, and 8 Secret Rare Cards

Bloodshot Reborn #1

If you’re a fan of the Valiant Universe then this is a “don’t miss” item. Let us know by February 26th and we’ll get this to your pull box.

From New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (THE VALIANT, Green Arrow) and red-hot rising star Mico Suayan (HARBINGER, Moon Knight), VALIANT NEXT delivers an all-new ongoing series for Valiant's most unrelenting hero!

Now, Bloodshot is a shadow of his former self. He lives in selfimposed exile, reeling from the consequences of his past life and the recent events that nearly drove him mad. But when a rash of shootings by gunmen who appear to look just like Bloodshot begin, his guilt will send him on a mission to stop the killers, even if it means diving headlong into the violence that nearly destroyed him.
