We're getting the band back together! Sort of . . .

Okay, let me get this out there before people start running into the streets screaming.

Folks, I have always wanted to come back and open in some form in the DFW area, but in the five years (in another month) that we've been closed, lots of things that I had hoped to have fixed haven't been and with Covid and inflation and this and that, well, I've had to tone down my dreams a little.

In the meantime, I decided to at least dip my toes back into the water before cannonballing. Most of you probably don't know, but the Kid and I had moved out about an hour east of the Metroplex to the little town of Winnsboro. It's an agriculture-meets-the-arts kind of town of only 3500 people. In fact, several friends have
property out here and several have visited.

We have a few little antique stores that rent booths to vendors and I took the leap and got a very small space to test the waters. I'll be selling mostly books though I'll also be selling pop culture items and toys and will try to expand my space. The idea is to take over a very large corner of the building and sell out of there. If business booms and I can do it affordably, then I will look for a store front of my own, but for now, I will take this spot and make it mine.

These photos are just a few things that I dropped off today. The Kid and I will be bringing more stuff tomorrow to fill the shelves. New and used everything from genre books, graphic novels, comics, statues, figures, toys, etc. I may even experiment with things that I've never carried before. That sounds fun!

If you happen to be traveling through East Texas, stop by Finder's Keepers Antiques on Mainstreet in Winnsboro. Winnsboro is approximately 22 miles southeast of Sulphur Springs. The store is open Monday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm. Let me know that you're coming and we can visit.

Godzilla Minus One - The Big Nuclear Lizard Dominates

The reviews are in and Godzilla Minus One is being hailed as the one of the best, if not THE best, and I have to agree.

I've been on a Godzilla kick lately as I've been revisiting the older movies and the new Apple TV+ Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. If you haven't seen Monarch, do yourself a favor and do.

But about Minus One. I really went in thinking this was going to be a typical Godzilla movie with tons of carnage and miles of city skyline flattened, but it turns out that Godzilla is not the central character. And that's what makes this movie work.

If you're totally unfamiliar with the premise, basically Godzilla is kicking Japan when it's down right after WWII and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That's it in nutshell.

The movie tells the story of a "failed" kamikaze pilot, Koichi, who is one of two survivors of an attack by Godzilla at the end of the war. His cowardice is blamed for the deaths of his comrades and he returns home in shame. There he meets a young woman, Noriko, who is in charge of a baby whose dying mother begged her to save.

The first half of the movie focuses on the relationship these two develop along with the state of Japan after the war. Topics of Japan's government and how the military played upon the soldier's sense of honor in self-sacrifice are backdrops to the characters and action on screen. You have Koichi's shame because he didn't die honorably which in turn makes him feel worthless to those around him. In the end, he finds a way to redeem that honor and it works wonderfully on screen.

It truly is a movie about shame, loss, revenge, and redemption and there is a big nuclear lizard in the movie, too.

Speaking of Godzilla, he doesn't get much screen time in the first part of the movie, but he makes up for it on the second half and when he is on screen he rules the land. It's hard to believe that this movie had a budget of only $15 million. Hollywood needs to take note of this movie for that and the overall way it was written.

There are no end credits, though the end of the movie does leave room for something else to come afterwards, but to me, it's perfect right where it is.

Check it out, if you haven't already, and if you have seen it, let me know what you thought!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Delivers

The Kid and I took in a movie last night and checked out the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Mutant Mayhem. From the art style, the soundtrack, and the story, the movie satisfied on all fronts.

First a little history about my time with the Turtles. I loved the first movies back in the eighties but didn't follow the cartoons or the comics. That's fine, you can like one medium and not the others and still love the characters. The Bay movies were okay but didn't really hit with me and so when I heard they were doing a new movie, I wasn't very interested.  Then I saw the trailers. I loved the art style and the overall gist of it and though I wasn't head over heels, I was going to give it a chance.

I'm glad we did. The overall story differs a little from the original but it works. The art style fits the movie well, also. Though I've never been to New York, it's always been portrayed as a mix of dirt, grit, energy, and color and this style conveys that very well.

The movie has plenty of easter eggs from the other iterations over the decades and it was fun trying to catch them. The one thing that excelled for me was the soundtrack. With a mix of old-school and more modern hip-hop along with other favorites, this movie has a lot of ear candy. In fact, as I write this, I'm listening to the Spotify playlist. Lots of fun!

If you haven't seen it yet, give it a shot. Check out this review from Hollywood Matrimony!

Josh Gates of Expedition Unknown in Dallas

In March I surprised the Kid with tickets to see Josh Gates at the
Winspear Opera House
. That day finally arrived last week and it was a blast!

It's very hard to get me to drive back into Dallas now that I've experienced the quiet living of our small town out in East Texas. I hope that Mr. Gates realizes how much we love him to put ourselves through the driving on highways and downtown Dallas traffic. Needless to say, it paled in comparison to the fun that we had at the event.

The Kid is such a big fan of the show and Josh that I thought I would surprise her with tickets. The day couldn't come fast enough for her and I have to admit, I was ready for it too. I splurged on valet parking and tickets to a catered buffet before curtain time that way we didn't have to worry about eating beforehand or trying to find a parking spot. I'm all about convenience as I get older. The only thing we missed out on was a meet and greet before the show. I'm assuming that it was something that donors or members of the AT&T Performing Arts Center were privy to because I couldn't find a single link to it on Josh's website. Oh, well. Maybe next time. We arrived a little before six and had to wait a few minutes before they would let us in, and I think that was because of the said meet and greet. No worries, we waited it out in the little coffee shop in the plaza and listened to a local jazz group. It wasn't overbearingly hot and they had large fans to move the air around.

Once we were let in, we went up to the Skyline Terrace for the buffet. Bacon-wrapped Pork Tenderloin, Beef and Veggie Kabobs, Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad, and a few other items with a Creme Brulee bread pudding to finish it off. They offered a fixed-price dinner, but we liked the variety of the buffet as one of our party can be a picky eater.

As they called for seating in the theater, we made our way to our seats. We were just to the left of the stage and about nine rows back on the aisle. In this theater though, there really isn't a bad seat. The lighting was beautiful and I was entranced with the centerpiece or "chandelier." It was really a collection of lights that hung down and then were retracted into the ceiling before the show. The retracting was a sight, also. Music was played that was composed and performed by students from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing & Visual Arts.

Before the raising of the chandelier, images projected onto the back of the stage kept everyone amused with quotes from movies and witty warnings about such things as "no flash photography . . . unless you see Bigfoot. Then go for it!"

Josh Gates took the stage to thunderous applause and for almost two hours we were entranced with stories about how he became who he is and how the many shows that he has helmed came about. For those that aren't aware of who he is, well, I hope you've stuck with me so far. Josh got his start with a show called Destination Truth. My late wife and I were hooked on it and loved how Josh doesn't take himself too seriously while mixing science with urban legends. He's kept that same formula with all of his other shows including Expedition Unknown which just started its eleventh season on May 24th, 2023.

He rounded out the evening with a Q&A and I have to admit the audience, with a good number of kids, did not disappoint with the questions. Everything from what's your favorite episode, your worst episode, your most embarrassing moment on camera, to like Indiana Jones' fear of snakes, what was his biggest fear. All answers were delivered with self-deprecation, humbleness, and a wink and sly grin. The only question that no one asked and that I really wanted to was "Has Steven Speilberg called about donning the hat and whip?"

Check out the Facebook page for all of the photos from our trip.

Binging the Murderbot!

I have very few book series where I try to read all of the books. Of course, you can't read The Fellowship of the Ring without reading The Two Towers and Return of the King. Most books nowadays, you can get away with reading the first and be done with it. I've never read anything past Dune or Eye of the World. I'd like to, but there are just so many other books out there in the universe.

That being said, there are a few authors that I like to read everything that they have. Not in a one after another way, but every few months. Until now. I had been reading about The MurderBot Diaries and never picked them up, and can't say why or why not. It just hadn't jumped out at me. Then I was reading one of those lists about great recent sci-fi and decided to take a chance.

I didn't realize it at first, but the first few books were actually novellas, which allowed me to finish them rather quickly. I hadn't finished a book in under a week since before I opened the shop back in 2014. And when I finished All Systems Red, I immediately started Artificial Condition. I'm now on book number five, Network Effect, and it continues to deliver like the others. This is, also, the first full length novel in the series, though some of the books to follow are novellas.

This is a series that you should really read from the beginning, though. I'm never been one to jump on a series like this, but believe me it's really good.

Here is a blurb about the first book (Amazon) and links to it on Amazon and Bookshop.

All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries) - Martha Wells

Winner: 2018 Hugo Award for Best Novella
Winner: 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella
Winner: 2018 Alex Award
Winner: 2018 Locus Award
One of the Verge's Best Books of 2017
New York Times and USA Today Bestseller

A murderous android discovers itself in
All Systems Red, a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial Intelligence.

"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure."

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth."

Halloween Comicfest 2022 in DFW

October 29th is approaching fast. For comic book fans, we start looking forward to Halloween Comicfest! Usually celebrated the Saturday of or before Halloween, it is a time for comic book publishers to reach out to the fans, old and new, and give them a treat for the season in the form of seasonal comic books.

When the shop was open, we looked forward to this time of year, in addition to Free Comic Book Day. We always planned for a big crowd and had fun with games, drawings, and a costume contest. The Kid and I look back on those days with fondness and with a longing to hang with our friends and customers again.

Follow the link below to see what comics will be available this year. Also, be sure and let us know in the comments what comic shops you will be visiting this year?

FenCon Returns!

Fencon XVIII returns to the Dallas-Fort Worth area September 16-18 at the Sheraton DFW Airport located at 440 W. John Carpenter Freeway in Irving, Texas. The fan-operated science-fiction and fantasy literary and Filk convention has been a staple in DFW since 2004 and is readily anticipated after taking a hiatus during 2021.

For those new to FenCon, it is a fandom of scifi/fantasy with a hodge-podge of other interests thrown in for good measure. Everything from Filk (folk music with scifi/fantasy themes, or as I call it, fictional folk), science programming, a charity auction, writers workshop, costuming and maker programming and guests from all of these topics and more.

I visited FenCon for the first time in 2009, but my most memorable was in 2011 when I got to meet some of my favorite authors such as Tee Morris, Pip Ballantine, Gail Carriger, P. N. Elrod and the late Rachel Caine.

This year the Guest of Honor is Larry Correia author of MONSTER HUNTER NATION published by Baen Books. In fact, he will be part of a pre-FenCon signing and meet & greet at the Half Price Books Flagship store on Northwest Highway in Dallas. More info below.

Have you visited FenCon before? What was your favorite part? Let us know in the comments!

Sci-fi Timeline

Glow New Media is a UK-based graphic and web design company with a love of sci-fi. Here they've put together a sci-fi timeline of some their (and hopefully your) favorite titles. Check it out below!

We're all used to seeing movies and games set in the future, but often the date can seem a bit abstract.

We've brought together some of our favourites to show you the timeline and where they all fit. There were some surprises!

See for yourself, and decide if the writers got it right!

Celebrating National Science Fiction Day 2021

Since about 2011, January 2 has been set aside as National Science Fiction Day. The date is significant as it is the birthday of Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific science-fiction writers of the 20th century. He coined the term 'robotics' and developed the '3 Laws of Robotics' and contributed many more terms, ideas and stories over his wonderful career.

I've been a fan of science-fiction since I was a kid. Born a year before the moon landings, I watched Saturn V's launch and saw the USS Enterprise every week in syndication. I watched 'Battlestar Galactica' on the tube and 'Star Wars' on the silver screen. Tom Baker was my Doctor in the early 80's. I loved old sci-fi B-movies on the late late show such as 'Twenty Million Miles to Earth' and 'Forbidden Planet'. Science-fiction even showed up in music from Sheb Wooley's 'Flying Purple People Eater' to Billy Thorpe's 'Children of the Sun." Comics added another medium to enjoy with titles like 'Starblazer', comic adaptations of 'Lost in Space' and a story of an alien come to Earth in 'Action Comics' Superman. I read the newspaper strips of 'Flash Gordon' and 'Buck Rogers' and used to clip them and then glue them into spiral-bound notebooks to make my own comic books. This all has molded me into the sci-fi lover I am today.

I continue to read novels, classic and new, comics and I collect spacecraft, robots and space pistols. I have a small collection but I'm always looking to add to it.

There are many ways to celebrate National Science Fiction Day. You could do a marathon of your favorite movies or TV shows. You could relax with a good book or some comics. Even better, share your love of sci-fi and tell some one about your favorite book, show, etc. Whatever you do, take time to enjoy!

What is your favorite book, show, movie, franchise? Tell us and share that love!

I finally finished THE MANDALORIAN

Okay. I finally got around to watching the last episodes of The Mandalorian. OMG! ! ! What a phenomenal ending to this season and the promises in the credit scene just made me giddy with delight!

It's been so hard dodging all of the reviews and reactions on FB and the interwebs but I think I did pretty good and was genuinely surprised at all of the Easter eggs and revelations. I can't wait to see what the future holds with this show and the others that are coming in the near future.

If you haven't watched the final episode, have you been able to steer clear of all of the hype?

Covid and Conventions

Where I'm living now, which is very rural, we have Covid but not in the numbers that afflicts the larger counties of Texas. That's not to say that we forgo all common sense and flaunt our immune systems, though. I feel that we may be more common sense about it out here than anywhere because I definitely see more face coverings than I do when I venture back into heavily populated areas. We all wear them when we can't social distance and we wash and sanitize those hands!

I took a chance on moving some old store product at the Hunt County Comic Expo, not really worried about the pandemic because of the above realizations. I also knew that the guy putting the show on wouldn't balk on taking care of the vendors and show-goers. And he didn't.

Brigandry Games in Commerce, Texas has enough space that Cody Glenn could space the aisles out to give visitors room to move. Vendor spots were still next to each other, but that wasn't a worry. Sanitizer was everywhere. Everyone was required to mask up from the time they walked in to the time they left. I was wearing a mask that my mother-in-law had made. It was 2-ply and thick. Occasionally, I had to catch a quick breath for my lung capacity has never fully recovered from my issues back in 2017. Other than that, everyone did their part to make it a safe day.

But, the turnout was still low. I can't blame anyone for being worried about the second wave. It's gonna happen, the question is how big will it be. I have a friend back in Ft. Worth who tested positive the day before the event (she isn't connected to it in any way) and is at home going through mild symptoms.

My next door neighbors were Wednesday's Mid-Week Break in Denton and Castle Jones Vintage. The big draw was voice actress Stephanie Nadolny who voices multiple characters in the Dragonball Z franchise mainly Gohan and Young Goku. For those of us who are older and know Vince Vance and the Valiants, well, she sang with them, too. Plenty of cosplayers present so checkout Daniel Calhoun's Captain AmeriDad page to see the highlights there.

A date is set for next year and hopefully we will have vaccines and be on our way to normalcy or the "new normal" or whatever you want to call it. I don't know if I'll be back, since I don't have any more product, but I do know that I'll be spreading the news about it and visiting myself, because we need that social contact and community especially in times like these. Just make sure to mask up, sanitize and distance.

Stay safe and check out the the Facebook Page for photos from the show.

What I'm Watching: Hubie Halloween

The Kid took off to see grandma for the weekend and that means Daddy gets to watch what he wants. I saw this trailer the other day and decided to watch it tonight, and I have to admit I was very pleased with it.

Adam Sandler delivers his usual town idiot character, the sweet but bullied imbecile. This movie has a ton of cameos and the typical adult humor that Sandler movies are known for, but it is still a pretty good show. In addition to the Happy Madison stable of collaborators and actors, there are several actors from my daughters Disney shows. One of those actors that was preparing to be in this movie is the late Cameron Boyce who passed away last year. He had played Sandler's on-screen son in Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. In fact, Sandler has a special dedication to Boyce at the end of the movie.
All in all, a fun movie with quite a few laughs and tons of Halloween atmosphere. Give it a shot and let me know what you think!

What I'm Watching: The Monster Squad

I had all intentions of watching a new vampire movie with the Kid, but she was worried that it was too scary. Yeah, definitely need to have her watch more so that I can build up her tolerance. Anyway, we ended up watching THE MONSTER SQUAD.

This movie came out the year after I joined the Navy so I wasn't necessarily the target market. In fact, I'm not even sure that the kids involved were the target market. This was the first time that I had watched it and have to admit that I really enjoyed it.

Now remember, I watched it with my 10 yo daughter. She probably should be a little older to watch this, but I explain things to my kid. Your discretion is advised. There is language and some scenes that probably will need some context by parents. I had to explain what a virgin is and how some things the boys did were not really appropriate. Some of the jokes were dated, but overall, if your watching and can lend context, then they should like it. My kid did.

Are you a "Monster Squad kid?" Or are you like me and watching it much later in life?

The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda Return!

October 30th will see the return of THE MANDALORIAN and his ward, the Baby Yoda. We've already heard that Rosario Dawson will be showing up as Ahsoka Tano to the delight of many CLONE WARS fans. In the new Season Two trailer below, you'll notice a figure in the shadows. This new character is played by WWE superstar Sasha Banks, but there is still speculation to who she is. Many are talking on the interwebs that it may be Sabine Wren. In REBELS she associates with Ahsoka and it doesn't happen too much before the timeline of THE MANDALORIAN.

With the imminent approach of Season Two, these characters are everyone in the merch world. We had to pick up a shirt for school and some groceries and the Kid snagged two Baby Yoda items. For me, I'm just thrilled that it'll soon be back and so I'll binge the first season again.

So, are you ready for it? Have you watched it? What are you're thoughts about the mysterious lady?

There're happenings afoot at Antarctic Press!

Antarctic Press has been busy as of late with a new graphic novel, an artist change-up, and local artists lending their talents, and that's all in addition to a new show on Netflix.

Ben Dunn, who is a co-creator of Antarctic Press, has been busy. In July Netflix premiered WARRIOR NUN based upon his manga WARRIOR NUN AREALA  and it's already been greenlighted for a second season.

His next project is a graphic novel based in his NINJA HIGH SCHOOL universe. NINJA HIGH SCHOOL INDIE WAR TP concerns the release of an evil entity known as D-Kay and the ensuing battle as heroes of NHS try to capture it. This epic story is helped along with artwork from many great talents including local Dallas artists! Look for art by Mike Vosburg, Fred Perry, Matthew Weldon, Bronte Erwin, Khalid Robertson, Luis Rivera, Dell Barras, Christy JediGoddess. Look for upcoming news about more of these artists. To get your copy of NINJA HIGH SCHOOL INDIE WAR TP it is being solicited in the October issue of PreviewsWorld and hits stores on December 30, 2020.

And last but not least, local artist Terry Parr has been signed to start penciling NINJA HIGH SCHOOL starting with issue #180. Word is that his wife Halo will do coloring. If you've never seen any of their art, they run SHONUFF STUDIOS and have the comic, AEROBICIDE: EXTREME NINJA WORKOUT. NHS #180 doesn't have a set date but should hit in December.

Make sure you let your favorite local comic shop know that you want these!

We wish much success to everyone involved!

New Comic Book Day?

New Comic Book Day has, at least for the last twenty to twenty-five or so years, always been on a Wednesday. This was to allow comic books stores to be on even footing when selling with no one store starting  to sell before anyone else and to help smooth out distribution hiccups. I'm sure there are more reasons, but this is it in a nutshell.

Then comes along 2020 and it's lackey DC Publishing. I won't get into the details of how DC distributes it's comics but it's a mess. DC can't be nice and deliver comics on the same day as everyone else, they have to be poopy heads about it.

Before all of this, if you wanted to see what was coming out from everyone, I would have pointed you to Previewsworld, but they don't have the DC listings, at least not where I could find it. I thought I was doing everyone a favor by posting the release list here, but if it's missing a publisher, is it really doing you any good.

That's why I'm just going to offer you some links on how to keep up with your releases.

First off, for those that just want to peruse the list and don't really have any that they are tracking, you can find 95% of the publishers at Previewsworld. By going to the website and clicking on New Releases you get plenty of options from which to choose. But alas, no DC Comics.

For that you can go to the DC website here. By clicking on Comics & Graphic Novels, you'll be presented with that weeks offerings and an option to browse upcoming weeks.

Alright, but what about those folks that are tracking certain issues or series? Well, you've got a few options there also.

If you were a customer at A Galaxy Called Dallas, you'll remember that we had implemented a new POS and website system called ComicHub. It's the brainchild of a guy out of New Zealand and I'm not sure why anyone hadn't put something like this together before. It allowed customers to keep track of their purchases, order ahead, know when it came in, earn discounts, and it allowed us to track sales better, inventory and sales trends. Unfortunately, right now there are only three DFW shops; Collected Ft Worth/Collected Keller and Red Pegasus in Oak Cliff. There is also Oiltown Comics down in Corsicana. ComicHub has plenty of videos and tutorials to show you how to get the most out of the website.

Another site that I've tried is one that I've always likened to "Facebook for comics." It's called League of Comic Geeks and it's got some pretty cools tools, though I haven't played with all of them yet. It allows you to track your pulls and even email them to your local shop. I've read where they've got things in the pipe for implementation down the line, but for now, it's not bad.

So, riddle me this? What do you use to browse the upcoming comics? Are you a pull list person or do you like to walk the shelves? Let me know in the comments below or message me.

Remember to read more comics, play more games and let you Geek flag fly!

Trailer for DUNE (2020) Released

I can't remember if I saw the movie DUNE before or after I read the book, but I do remember that I had to read and watch both twice to feel that I understood them. I was in my junior year of high school trying to read the scifi/fantasy classics and so couldn't wait to tackle this.

Now, it's thirty-six years later and we have a new vision and if this trailer is any indication, it's going to be amazing. I feel that I may need to read the book again. Maybe, being a little (lol, a little) older might give me some insight into the story or at least help in the comprehension.

So, question: Have you read the book? Seen the original? What are your thoughts or expectations?
